News and links, week 41

Wolves haven't been seen in Belgium since the 19th century.

  1. Great electoral results for us communists. PVDA+ has more seats than ever before. Until now they had 1 seat in Genk, 1 in La Louviere and 6 in Zelzate (and I believe 1 in Seraing or one of the communities nearby). Now all those seats were kept, in Genk they even won extra seats, and 8 percent of votes + 4 seats in Antwerp! Given how the media refuses to pay attention to the party and how they focussed so heavily on Bart De Wever versus Patrick Janssens, this is a huge success. And then some complain the left has been too divided to stand any chance? Rubbish. No true socialist or communist can still take SP.A for real after their governing the last decade, but thanks to PVDA there is a REAL left wing alternative. If anything, PVDA made sure the left is still represented in the score, rather than having divided the left. Or did Janssens prefer the disillusioned socialists to give De Wever even more votes as a protest? Thanks to PVDA the votes at least remained left of the center! In addition PVDA has seats in the Antwerp provincial governments, seats in several Walloon municipalities, and the first 2 seats in the Brussels district (1 seat in Molenbeek and 1 in Schaarbeek). I would say that in the shadow of N-VA's success, PVDA is the moral winner on the left side of the spectrum. Still, the media hardly pays attention to the fact that PVDA has grown in almost every city, and still is not inviting the party top for any debates... Is the media afraid to face the fact that communism is alive and kicking? I would call all disillusioned socialists who do no longer support N-VA to choose side with PVDA, together we can form a left-wing front that is truly capable of realising something!

PS: in 3 Brussels municipalities a party called "Islam" won a seat in the municipality. I don't see this as a bad thing. Belgium will never become an "islamic state", that's just nonsense from the Vlaams Belang to scare people. They will never push through islamic laws. What this party can do however, is defend the rights of a minority which is constantly discriminated against and fight for equal and honest treatment of the Muslim community in Belgium. I don't see what could be wrong with that.

PS II: in Antwerp there was a party called "SEX" on the list. They however didn't even get 0.01 percent of votes. But of all the often silly named of local parties, this one wins the prize for original name choice. Although "BEU" (= tired of something) is a nice runner-up, especially since the only member of this party asked not to vote for him and only created the party to avoid being called up to count votes.

Typo of course. I mean the disillusioned voters of SP.A should join forces with PVDA; not the NVA voters. SP.A has too often made compromises with right wing neoliberal parties just to protect their seats, and they betray the socialist ideal of equality if you look at the salaries of their elected members. To all true leftists out there: PVDA is growing and if the left unites itself we can achieve something big in 2014 on national level!!

Ontwaakt, verworpenen der aarde, ontwaakt! :)
